New Thor accelerator will recreate pressure felt only at the Earth’s core
The research of new materials has experienced a considerable progress in recent years, and Sandia National Laboratories in the United States has now announced a machine that is ready to revolutionize the analysis of new materials at extreme temperatures and pressures. Thor is an impressive accelerator that enables the study of materials at the same pressure as in the Earth’s core. That is, Thor is capable of producing a magnetic field of about one million atmospheres, enough to “crush” any material.

Sandia is famous for their Z machine, the world’s most powerful pulsed-power accelerator, which is capable of submitting materials to a pressure of five million atmospheres, which is five times more than Thor’s capability.
