The Ocean Cleanup Project to start first trials in the North Sea

The revolutionary system that was designed to collect trash from the oceans, the Ocean Cleanup project created by Boyan Slat when he was only 19, will be officially starting trials in open waters in the summer of 2016, about 23 kilometers off the Dutch coast in the North Sea.

The Ocean Cleanup Foundation will install a 100-meter barrier in the North Sea, where it will collect plastic bags, bottles and other types of waste, plastic or not, that it finds. The system collects the garbage passively, thus allowing sea animals – such as dolphins, seals or even fish – to pass though it safely.
