The Cost of the Volkswagen Cheat
It’s now an acknowledged fact that the German automotive giant Volkswagen did indeed cheat on the emissions system of some 11 million of their diesel cars. What hasn’t been discussed quite as much is how they did it, and how they got caught.
Back in 2013, a humble little outfit called the International Council on Clean Transportation initiated a study that involved a couple of VW’s diesel cars. The ICCT teamed up with West Virginia University to undertake what they felt at the time would just be another routine study, like so many they’d done before. The ICCT’s John German, speaking with Bloomberg, noted, “We had no cause for suspicion.
