Acoustic instrument Yaybahar creates the most incredible sounds you will hear today
Istanbul-based musician Görkem Şen created a very exquisite instrument: the Yaybahar, which consists of a large wooden structure that is somewhat similar to a string instrument. What Şen did was connect the strings to two drum-like membranes using springs.
He plays it kind of like someone would play bass or cello, the distinction here is that the vibrations produced by the strings travel through the springs and resonate cyclically on the membrane of the drums. The result is a very complex and mesmerizing sound – a mixture of folk and futuristic sci-fi sounds. It is so acoustic that it doesn’t require the use of any special effect or distortion – it naturally produces very beautiful and eccentric melodies, which Şen shows in the video below.
